!±8± Lung Cancer - How Lung Cancer Can Be Prevented

Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in America. Unfortunately, many of the treatments that work well on other forms of cancer do not work well with this type of cancer. It is typically diagnosed at a later stage as well. This is why it is so important to know how this type of cancer can be prevented.

The obvious way it can be prevented is by not smoking. Smoking is responsible for 87% of lung cancers in America. While quitting smoking at any time will lower the risk of developing this type of cancer, not smoking at all will give you that added prevention.

While on the topic of smoking, second hand smoke is dangerous as well. A little known fact is that exposure to second hand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers by 50-75%.

Exposure to radon in the home is the second leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Radon is the odorless and invisible gas that is derived when radium in the soil decays. There are test kits available at hardware stores to test the amount in your home. If you find abnormally high levels, the EPA can help assist you in the proper way to eradicate.

Prevention is a critical topic when it comes to lung cancer. With the lack of treatments, knowledge and awareness of those things that cause cancer is the best form of protection. It is important that you know the warning signs of cancer and visit your doctor with any concerns.
